Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is an advanced additive manufacturing process that utilizes a laser to selectively melt and solidify metal powder in a predefined area, building up the desired part layer by layer. This technology is predominantly employed in industrial applications and offers significant technical advantages, particularly in the production of complex molds, personalized medical components, and automotive parts.

SLM TechnologyProcess Principle

SLM, also known as Selective Laser Melting, operates on a similar principle to Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). A laser is directed onto a bed of metal powder, selectively melting and fusing the powder particles to form a solid layer. This process is repeated layer by layer until the final part is produced. Prior to printing, the model is prepared and support structures are added using specialized software. The data is then exported to the printer for fabrication.

SLM Technology3D Printing Process

During the printing process, the laser emits a focused beam of light onto the metal powder bed, precisely melting the powder in the targeted areas. The molten metal rapidly solidifies upon cooling, forming a solid layer. Subsequently, the build platform is lowered, and a new layer of powder is evenly spread over the previous layer. This process continues iteratively until the entire part is completed. Once printing is finished, the built part is removed from the powder bed, excess powder is removed, and any support structures are detached. The printed part may undergo additional post-processing steps such as grinding and polishing to achieve the desired surface finish and dimensional accuracy.
